At the heart of the desert was Mednessa, a sanctuary in an otherwise chalky and blinding province. Here, doors remained unlocked, children played in the streets, and guards wandered about disarmed, as the lack of well… lacking things pacified the citizenry.
It had started as a mining camp in a mountain. A prospecting team nearly flooded their operation after striking an aquifer, and the discovery brought in merchants and explorers from afar. Formerly obscure hideaways revived as barrels of water arrived by the cartload in days instead of weeks, empowering all to survey the land for its bounty.
With the sandy beast tamed, people put down roots and started families, and over time, brick houses replaced the patchwork tents of old.
That’s what school taught me, anyway. I must’ve slept through the part where they mentioned how this bright-eyed view of the city only applied to its upper districts, or I simply forgot, given it was twentyish years ago.
“Hey Miss, can you tell me the time?” asked the feminine voice again.
Keep walking. I needed to keep walking. Please, please, please be talking to someone else… I stared at the ground while my hands balled into fists.
My legs were killing me, and the street was looking increasingly cozy, so why not cut through the lower district to get home sooner? That was the great idea I had a few minutes ago.
Only the ambiance from the other districts’ lights kept this area illuminated. The guards didn’t bother or were too scared to set up lanterns here.
As my run flapped my dress and sun hat, our shared footsteps echoed against the barren buildings on both sides of the street. At this time and place, it couldn’t have been anything but trouble.
Clackclackclackclack! The figure at my side whooshed past and whipped around. She took a step toward me and I almost tripped over her.
“Miss, all I want to know is the time.”
Maybe, just maybe, she was someone normal. A dust or a native human, or even an outsider human! I looked up to see… that she wasn’t, and my hopes shattered.
